JOURNAL ONE: ORIENTATION TO SCHOOL

I met Susan Palmer a week before starting the field experience. I came in on a Tuesday after school was let out and we talked for about an hour. She provided me with worksheets and information that the students have been given to get me up to speed with what was going on in the classroom. We also reviewed what was expected of me and how often I would be teaching the class. I asked about the demographics of the classroom and learned that it is mostly white and there are no ELL students. She provided me with a class list the first Monday that I observed her classroom.

They rarely use textbooks and the books they do have are very out of date. Occasionally they use the textbook to give the students a visual aid of new or reviewed information. The lessons follow “themes” in all of the language classrooms. We communicate outside of the classroom through email.
